CaringCrowd

CaringCrowd is a crowdfunding platform for global public health powered by J&J.

I took over design support 2 years ago as the site had just wrapped up a redesign. Since taking over as lead designer I have helped design and launch new features as well as support current features of the site.

My first task as the lead designer on the project was delivering screens to the dev team and tying up loose ends from the redesign. The business was still eager to begin designing out new features. My first new feature to go live with CaringCrowd was the Digital Card feature. It allowed donors to gift pledges on someone else’s behalf. We went live just before Mother’s Day 2017 and the site saw its biggest month of pledges to date.

After exploring some initial ideas of how the Digital Card flow would work, I eventually landed on an experience where the user would select the card they wanted to send, fill out the recipient’s information and send it along with a message. Along with creating the UX for the Digital Cards, I also delivered over 100 card designs throughout the course of 2017 and 2018.

Partnering with the Business on all Design

After the initial success of the Digital Card release, the business adopted more of a partnership with me on design and began reaching out on all design requests. Over the years I’ve delivered anything from business cards to trade show booth designs to infographics.

Workshopping New Features for the Year

Going into 2018 the business had some ideas for new features that had to be workshopped into a functional UX. I met with the team for a two day workshop to ideate and wireframe out screens and flows. Coming out of the workshop we had a good idea of what features we wanted to move forward with and flesh out on screen. The predominant features were Site Gift Cards, Team pages, and My Impact Profile section.

Gift Card Experience

Gifting users pledge money was a really fun problem to figure out. Because payment isn’t received from a donor until a project reaches its goal, gift cards posed a unique challenge. The full experience had to incorporate:

• Purchasing “Pledging Power”

• Viewing available Pledging Power

• Applying Pledging Power to projects

• A slew of states to facilitate the UX

My Impact & Profile

With the number of users and projects on CaringCrowd growing the business wanted a way to present the donors with a snapshot of all the projects they’ve donated or pledged to. I designed out a full profile experience that included account information, contributions and an interactive map. The “My Impact” map is probably my favorite feature on the site - it allows you to see all projects you’ve contributed to around the world by country.
